the weekend from…

in case u are wondering where i was and where i will be for the next few days…

  • thursday i got a call that a friend was flying into philly (an hour from me) and wanted me to come up and help her get around for the weekend she does not know the city and she is on oxygen…
  • so friday i get up and drive all over ending up at a ghetto-mart where no one speaks english to find my friends favorite brand of chorizo because i know it will make her whole trip to get her hands on some since it is only sold in the tri state area here (its a dry sausage popular in Puerto Rican dishes) went up to spend the weekend in the 97 degree F 95% humidity philadelphia – where i almost melted….
  • friday night i get about 2.5 hours sleep….i dont sleep well in hotels and my friends o2 thing makes noises all night
  • saturday morning i get a text a freak unexpected storm hit my house overnight and the roof which is being replaced leaked swamping the back half of the attic…mostly clothes, blankets, sleeping bags….
    • the roof is being replaced and my uncle was working on that part he left it covered the weather reports said all clear he was coming back in the morning to finish it up…
    • in the next text i am told a tree came thru my uncles roof (yes the same uncle) and he has a new skylight into his bathroom…made by the attic fan that is now in his bathtub
  • saturday at 1pm i get a messege the power has gone out at my home…and the neighbors (well abandon house’s) 50 foot tree is in our back yard…. which is actually a good thing if it had fallen the way it was leaning the last 4 years it would have been in the bedroom of our other neighbors’ children
  • saturday afternoon my friend has a private event to attend i get 1 hour nap…
  • saturday night we get to the playhouse where the event my friend is in town for is, and the AC is not working – it is 104 in the playhouse BEFORE the people begin to enter….they had staff handing out water bottles…in 3 hours sitting just behind the stage curtain incase my friend needed me i drank 6 bottles of water (about 2-3 liters)…and sweated out about 7
  • saturday night by the time we settle into the hotel it is nearly midnight, we have to be up at 7, and my friend is not feeling well from the heat on stage and not eating she is up and down all night with acid reflux which wakes me up (as i said i do not sleep well in hotels) i get about 4 hours of broken sleep maybe 2 hours was the long stretch
  • sunday morning i go online and check the electric outages for my home…of the roughly 183k houses in my county 76k have reported outages…and generally for every 2 who report 1 cannot due to phone outages also i check my city, of about 4000 houses, only 20 by the hospital have power eta to return power, july 6th by midnight….
  • drop friends at the airport, and head for the home depot about 45 minutes from home for generator and chain saw….
  • watch the guy loading the last 2 generators in peoples cars as i walk to the building….
  • go in and look at chainsaws, meet 2 men from the next town over from me, also looking at chainsaws, it was the closest home depot that had them….
  • by now it is about 1030am and i am getting a migraine from the heat, lack of sleep and lack of food….because i was in a rush to get to the airport and i didn’t get to eat still have to hit target and try to find ice…get leaf bags at target
  • get on highway heading towards home still needing ice…manage to find 4 bags of ice in a walgreens on an exit that i knew had a few little shops on it…luckily i had a large cooler bag in my trunk with sodas dumped them out into trunk put ice in bags….
  • get home…95 degrees, no breeze, no power… luckily just about 10 days ago i bought a BBQ grill…so burgers on the grill is dinner…they were mostly defrosted so they had to be cooked….
  • monday morning still no power – got about 4 hours bad sleep in the heat…
  • get up and pack my clothes in my suitcase, dirty, and drive 45 minutes to my aunts where she has offered her washer and swimming pool…i go n dirty clothes because i literally had NOTHING clean left…i left friday morning intending to come home and do wash….
  • about 3pm as last wash load is done and stuff is on lines it is getting chilly, check the electric company’s app (they have an app for that) and it says my house is not reporting an outage..
  • text the neighbor just to make sure and yep we have power…so collect the clothes from the line into trash bags wet, semi-wet & dry and come home…
  • start clothes in the dryer – about 2 loads to dry…and i look around to see all the clothes that still need to be washed and dried from the rain in the attic….close my eyes and walk out of the room LOL
  • clean out freezer & fridge – fill 2 30 gallon trash cans with food that spoiled or was not worth chancing…
  • freezer left with ice maker only….wash down all the shelves since it is empty anyways…stick some water bottles in there and some tubs of water and turn it on so i can run ice maker without messign it up…
  • grab all the unopened condiments from the pantry and restock fridge as best i can and start a list of needed foods….fill fridge with gatoraid and water for my uncle to start back on the roof tomorrow
  • open the cooler that had the meat in it…luckily i had some bagged frozen soups and they were placed on top of all the meats in the good cooler as soon as the power went out (out freezer does not stay cold long due to the ice dispenser)….most of the meat is ok, some is still frozen
  • cook off 6 steaks for 2 people for dinner (4 are in the fridge now to et later) and put the rack of ribs in the crock pot with tomato sauce to cook over night for spaghetti tomorrow (yes i make my sauce with ribs in it occasionally
  • eat
  • shower
  • change laundry again
  • food shop to restock fridge and freezer some…$270 worth of food (spent 200 thank you coupons) and they are still both only half full….
  • as for the laundry i still have this to do…(not pictured is my towels, and several sleeping bags….FYI i bought a rope and clothes pins while food shopping now i just need to find soem trees to hang them from…
